ASC Certification

The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, international non-profit organization that established the world’s strictest sustainability standard in June 2012. The goal of ASC is to promote more sustainable, environmentally and socially responsible salmon production. This is achieved through effective market mechanisms that create value throughout the value chain. By choosing ASC-certified salmon, consumers can be confident that they are purchasing salmon from a responsible farmer. With more than 400 audit criteria across seven main categories, the ASC standard is difficult to achieve and maintain. It requires significant resources in terms of documentation and reporting before, during, and after certification. More details can be found on the ASC website.

SalMar Aker Ocean aims for 100% ASC certification. Ocean Farm 1 has been certified since August 2020, while Arctic Offshore Farming was certified Desember 2024.

Global G.A.P. Certification

The Global G.A.P. IFA standard for aquaculture is a global standard for responsible farming practices that covers the entire production chain, from broodstock to farming (including feed), harvesting, and transport.

Overview of IFA v6 for aquaculture:

  • Adopts a holistic approach covering food safety, animal health and welfare, environmental sustainability and biodiversity, worker well-being, production processes, legal compliance, and traceability.
  • Mandatory inclusion of the GLOBALG.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP).
  • Requires the sourcing of feed mixes used at the farm and hatchery level from compound feed producers with GLOBALG.A.P.-certified production processes.
  • Covers all species of fish, crustaceans, mollusks, and seaweed.
  • Applies to all types of aquaculture production systems with certification options for both individual producers and producer groups.
  • Evaluates all four pillars of the FAO’s Technical Guidelines for Aquaculture Certification and the OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) Aquatic Animal Health Code.
  • Supports increased efficiency and improved operational management.
  • Clarifies market requirements and serves as a practical handbook for site activities.
  • Enables producers to demonstrate responsible practices and allows buyers to identify production that meets their requirements.
  • Implements a continuous improvement plan at the site level to help producers analyze and enhance operations.

SalMar Aker Ocean undergoes annual audits by accredited and independent third-party certification bodies, resulting in a certificate valid for one year. Ocean Farm 1 is certified through Ocean Farming AS, while Arctic Offshore Farming is currently covered by the certifications of SalMar Farming. AOF will receive its own certifications at the next audit. Through collaboration with the parent company SalMar, our entire production chain from roe to sales is certified according to Global G.A.P.
