  • Mariculture AS

In September 2023, Mariculture AS was awarded development licenses (6,240 tonnes MTB) and an offshore location (outside the current production area) in the Norwegian Sea, becoming the first operator with a cleared site offshore. Offshore aquaculture will require larger, more complex, and costly production units and value chains compared to conventional aquaculture, which imposes greater demands for tailored and predictable regulatory conditions. Due to regulatory uncertainty related to resource rent tax and offshore aquaculture regulations, as well as limited yard capacity in the current market, SalMar Aker Ocean has decided to put further work on offshore aquaculture in Norway on hold. Once the final regulatory framework is clarified, providing the necessary predictability, the group will make a comprehensive assessment of the investment opportunity. In the meantime, we are focusing on optimizing existing units and continuing the development of cost-effective technology for use in semi-offshore/exposed environments, both in Norway and internationally.
